Up to 200 people have been asked to leave their homes after a "potentially volatile" substance was found in a flat.
Police worked with council emergency planners last night to move families from properties within 100m of the find in Newhall, South Derbyshire, as a precaution.
Officers said it could take until this afternoon before residents are allowed to return to their homes.
Police had been called to the scene on Saturday afternoon by neighbours worried about loud bangs coming from a block of flats.
Firefighters and bomb disposal experts also attended.
A 55-year-old man was arrested after the substance was discovered during a search of the flat in Belvoir Crescent.
Homes have been evacuated in Newhall, south DerbyshireCouncil officials told residents they found "volatile chemicals" in the flat that would take time to make safe.
Superintendent Paul Markham, who is in charge of the operation, said: "We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this matter and we are hoping that people will not be inconvenienced for too long.
"The evacuation is purely a precaution to ensure everybody's safety and residents will be allowed back home as soon as possible."
Evacuee Leslie Wood said: "Fire officers came to me and said there had been an incident and we had to vacate the premises for at least 24 hours."
A local school is being used as a coordination centre and temporary shelter.
